Thank you for your interest in our steel band program here at J.K. Percussion & Arts. Due to space limitations, number of participants are limited, first come first serve. If you or your student is interested in steel pan, don't wait to sign them up!
Steel pans (steel drums) were invented on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. They are widely used in afro-caribbean music, including calypso, soca and reggae. Today, you can hear "steel talk" in many different settings, including Panorama competitions around the world, at restaurants and private events. Steel pans are a family of instruments, similar to that of string instruments (violin, cello, bass, etc.). It is a huge part of the culture throughout the Caribbean islands, especially in Trinidad.
In the Steel Band program, students will learn to play the steel drums! They will learn about the history and the culture of Trinidad and will learn to play different pieces of music across many different genres!
Steel Bands will be structured as a three month program. One hour rehearsals, once a week, beginning February 21st and ending May 8th. In the final week, the students will participate in a performance, showcasing all their hard work!
